Description

As an intern with Ocado Technology, you will work on real development projects from day one, and have the opportunity to display the endeavours of all your hard work during our Intern Fair at the end of the Summer where you will have a fantastic opportunity to impress everyone who comes along!

Past interns have worked on projects across all Technology areas including:

  • CFC (Warehouse) Systems - developing the real-time control systems that power our state-of-the-art automated warehouses;
  • ECommerce and Mobile Systems - designing and implementing iOS and Android apps to improve the customer experience, plus enhancing the functionality of our award-winning sites;
  • Planning and Delivery Systems - building the routing systems which optimise our delivery routes;
  • or one of our Research teams, developing novel sensor-guided robotic systems or cutting-edge solutions that will enable 10x developments for our new Ocado Smart Platform.

To give you a flavour, previous internship projects have included Simulation/Visualisation: building 3D tools to help us design new warehouses, and analyse their behaviour through visually playing back events from either simulation or production. The visualisation playback is augmented with visual analytics, allowing us to assess system behaviour by indicating internal state through colour as well as the physical movement of entities within the warehouse.
working with the Robotics team to facilitate simulations of a robot assistant for use in our automated warehouses; Code for Life: Working on our new game to teach the basics of Artificial Intelligence to teenagers. Making huge progress on all aspects of the game and the project by learning: Django/python backend, database and deployment pipeline, front end with Unity game engine and React; NLP Recipe creation: using natural language processing and machine learning techniques to help create over 500,000 recipes.

We like to keep our intern projects really interesting and relevant. We’ll match you up to a suitable project that will enable you to get started straight away due to the skills and knowledge you already have, but we also want you to learn plenty too, to take away with you afterwards - so you will be stretched and given the opportunity to shine and learn many new things  during your time with us.

What we look for:

Minimum 2:1 for each of your course modules to date in a Computer Science related degree. You will have strong A-levels (or equivalent) ideally including an A grade in Maths plus a foundation in OOP and programming ability in Java or another OO language - not forgetting a passion for technology and an eagerness to find solutions to complex problems.

As well as looking out for the best and brightest, we’re also looking for people who reflect our values – people who can learn fast through experimenting; who are autonomous through taking ownership and driving innovation; who are collaborative and work well in high-performing teams. We value trust, honesty, and craftsmanship.

We’re all about innovation and refusing to accept the status quo, so if you’re keen to push the limits of your learning – and our technology – we want to hear from you!

Recruitment Process:

The process will involve an initial online test, and if you pass that successfully an assessment day will follow. This will include further technical tests, a technical interview and a behavioural interview. It’s not as scary as it sounds though! We’ve designed the process to be able to get to know you and to see what you’re capable of. You’ll also get lunch, and if you pass our morning session, a tour of our Hatfield CFC.

We expect the Summer placement to start in July 2019.

What we can offer you:

This is a great opportunity for those who love solving problems; sometimes this involves looking for a needle in a haystack. Finding and fixing the problem can be extremely rewarding. This opportunity will allow you to work with complex software systems, code/deploy fixes, as well as write independent systems to make dealing with issues easier and faster for you and others.

We will pay you equivalent to £30,000 per annum (pro rata) plus all our usual benefits including 15% staff discount, Friday socials, a variety of sports clubs plus much more.
