The Product Group Leader, (PGL), role fulfils the responsibility of developing and owning the technical roadmap of product development to support growth, reduce operating cost and improve efficiency for Ocado’s 24/7 high speed operation. The PGL remit includes but is not limited to maximising consistency and innovation advantages between products for their particular stream ensuring the T-Plan roadmap is aligned to the needs of other streams in the department and consistent with the S-Plan business roadmap owned by the Concept Development Manager communicating with all relevant departments and personnel within the business to ensure that product status is clearly understood.

  • Develop pervasive roadmaps for the portfolio of products they are responsible for, a roadmap for their release and also one for features and plot alternate courses of action for all products covered by a particular stream and ensure that projects in that stream are developed in accordance with the roadmap.
  • Responsible for using the appropriate decision support tools to analyse the roadmap landscape and identify suitable landmarks worthy of further exploration in order to identify key issues and innovation opportunities to support decision making and facilitate communication between multiple functions and perspectives.
  • Use the roadmap to track and manage new products, new services, business needs, external forces, regulatory specifications, emerging technologies, resources and supplier data
  • The PGL will capture product evolution plans and platform development, forecast the capability to meet those product plans, leading activities to recruit accordingly and identify and exploit ip opportunities interfacing closely with the internal business function.
  • Provide the stream EPMs with direction and guidance with respect of ensuring their products are the most suitable they can be for use in territories across the world, ensuring that opportunities for maximising component commonality and useable product variance are realised by feeding into requirements by holding synthesis workshops to guide those engineers in the particular product group.

Collating lessons learned from all related projects ensuring that these are up to date, available and fed into development projects. 

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

Minimum: Degree in a technically related subject.


  • Detail-orientated and organised individual, with a logical and methodological mind-set
  • Have a well-rounded and comprehensive interest and knowledge in new technologies
  • Must have very good negotiation skills with the ability to listen, comprehend, consider and assimilate others points of view with their own beliefs and visions.
  • Ability to put forward well thought out and cogently reasoned arguments when roadmap and other plans are subjected to scrutiny by higher management.
  • Able to assimilate and combine different types of information relating to separate topics into a coherent view.
  • Ability to make tactical and strategic based decisions.
