Product Owner - Infrastructure

Ocado Technology
Ocado Technology is the in-house technology division of over 1,000+ software developers, engineers, researchers and scientists that uses the latest in AI, robotics, cloud services, big data, and mobile technologies. We brainstorm, design, architect, innovate, experiment, build and maintain the systems that power Ocado.

Ocado Technology is developing a world class and highly innovative retail and fulfilment platform, called the Ocado Smart Platform (OSP). Our next generation fulfilment centres make sure that the stock we receive from our suppliers is stored in the right area of our automated warehouse, such that we can pick all the items in each of the customer orders passed to us. This task involves algorithms and business logic breaking the job down into component parts, which can be passed to our numerous people, conveyor and robot control systems for execution. We build resilient and scalable solutions, with efficiency and accuracy at the centre of everything we do.

We are building the new technology platform to enable each of our sites, running 24/7, to reach their 200,000 orders per week capability keeps us busy and continually presents new challenges for us to solve.

The Team: OSP Infrastructure
Our remit is broad so the work you will be involved in has an impact across our development teams, as well as the products we build to deliver our automated warehouses.

This will allow you to stretch your skills and embrace a growth environment where learning and new ideas are welcomed and encouraged.

Besides the team, the successful candidate will have the support of other PO’s as well as the Team Leads and Development Manager.

We believe in the power of agile and focus on delivering value incrementally, using data to constantly collect feedback from our systems to guide our future direction. Our teams operate with the freedom to work as they want and to design and build the best solution to business challenges they can.

You will have responsibility for:

  • Supporting the teams processes and removing obstacles in workflow wherever required
  • Working with stakeholders to define scope and prioritise stories to maximise business value using products created by the development teams
  • Maintaining the development teams focus on delivering value, balancing multiple streams of requirements and schedules so that they can concentrate on what they do best: delivering great products!
  • Working with development teams in estimation and review sessions
  • Working with other PO’s within the Infrastructure area and wider product area to make sure work remains aligned.
  • Being able to balance the need to do the day-to-day work that is demanded from your team as well as the development work needed to progress the products your team will help build.
  • Guide new features and services from inception to launch while keeping internal and external stakeholders at the center of everything.
  • Collect/give feedback and input from/to a diverse set of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Use data to make informed decisions about what the team should work on next, analyze how it is implemented and what the results are.
  • Develop and prioritise the backlog to continuously improve the products and services of your team.

We’d like to hear from you if you have:

  • Strong affinity with technology, especially infrastructure.
  • Previous hands-on experience as an engineer, or equivalent technical role.
  • 2:1 or 1st from a good university or equivalent work experience
  • Drive to become and keep improving as a Product Owner in an Agile Environment
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and influencing skills.

  • Ability to see the big picture, without losing sight of the product details.
  • An analytical orientation and strong problem-solving skills demonstrated by the ability to structure issues and analyze alternative solutions.
  • Fluency in English, both spoken and written.

We’d also be keen to see:

  • Demonstrable experience of working in an agile environment, ideally as a PO, but possibly as an agile coach or a similar role.
