In a nutshell

As Product Owner for HR, you will get to look after the employee management suite of systems that were all written in-house to fit with the processes and requirements identified within the HR department. The HR department includes the Learning & Development team, Engagement & Communications team, Shared Services team, Recruitment team, and HR business partners across the company.

You will work with these teams and the HR leadership team to maintain roadmaps for your products, prioritise these roadmaps, and elicit requirements rather than predefined solutions.The suite of systems covers the full lifecycle of an employee. This starts right from the applicant viewing jobs on the site, the recruitment system used to manage applications, the HR system used to record an employee’s career details, the internal intranet to allow employees to share information.

How will I spend my days

You will be a member of several development teams ranging from 4 and 7 developers that all follow similar scrumban processes. Within the product team you will: 

  • Discuss product increments with developers.
  • Develop product vision and strategy, which may include reselling our solutions to third parties.
  • Build strong relationships with business users and stakeholders.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the business uses and potential of our products.
  • Evaluate and validate new ideas and minimum viable increments.
  • Communicate needs and vision to software development teams.
  • Contributing to the technical direction of the product.
  • Look to optimise business value.
  • Product backlog management, including defining acceptance criteria and prioritisation.
  • Balancing tactical and strategic priorities.
  • Participate in technical release planning.
  • Monitor and communicate progress.

What I need to know

  • Proven experience as a product owner
  • Experience in an Agile environment
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong business skills.
  • An understanding and appreciation of software development and design.


  • 2:1 or First class degree in from a good university.
  • A strong track record in the retail, e-commerce or commercial software development sectors.
  • An understanding of lean start-up principles
  • An ability to evaluate product change through empirical measurement
