Description

Ocado's pure on-line storefront, state-of-the-art heavily automated warehouses, and own delivery network generate an enormous amount of data each and every day. Taken together these elements also form an exceptionally flexible commercial platform with unparalleled opportunity for algorithmic improvements. With all of that accessible, how would you make shopping even faster, easier, more efficient and environmentally friendly?

Within Ocado, the Analytics & Optimisation (A&O) team works closely with senior management and bears primary responsibility for transforming that data, generated by the commercial, logistic, and operational business units, into actionable insights or improved efficiency – in short, business value. This is accomplished via the execution of ad hoc analytic investigations, and the design and prototyping of statistical learning and bespoke optimisation algorithms, solving critical business challenges and enabling key strategic initiatives.

As a Data Scientist on the A&O team, you will be expected to work closely with its team lead and senior management to identify, scope, andprioritise projects, plan and manage those projects, support the hand-off of prototype systems and algorithms to peer Technology division teams, and effectively communicate complex technical issues and findings to a range of both technical and non-technical internal audiences.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Planning and execution of prioritisedanalysis and algorithm development projects.
  • Effectively communicating the methodology and results of analyses or algorithm trials to A&O's customers, making sound recommendations based on those results where appropriate.
  • Fully support the receiving Ocado Technology or analyst team when moving prototype algorithms or analysis tools into “production” use.
  • Develop a broad and deep understanding of Ocado's business, including its commercial and operations aspects.

Key Skills:

ESSENTIAL

  • A strong academic record including a postgraduate degree in mathematics, statistics, or computer science from a top-ranked university.
  • Experience conducting analysis of large, real-world data sets with statistical rigour and providing nuanced interpretations of the results.
  • The ability to model complex problems mathematically and/or computationally, and appropriately apply results obtained using those models.
  • Demonstrated computer programming ability.

DESIRABLE

  • Fluency in two or more of R, Java, and SQL.
  • Experience successfully conducting research of significant scope – an M.Phil. or Ph.D. will be looked on favourably.
  • Familiarity:
  • working with the Map-Reduce programming model (e.g., Hadoop),
  • using common machine learning toolkits (e.g., WEKA or Apache Mahout),
  • implementing scientific/numerical algorithms.
