Vacancy description

We’re Ocado Technology. We architect and build the ground-breaking, game-changing technology solutions that power Ocado, the world's largest online-only grocery retailer. We don’t do off-the-shelf. We don’t do easy. Because we’re writing, building and running all our own software systems, we’re constantly pushing the limits of what technology can do. And when we say ‘we’, we mean ‘you’. Join us and you’ll work across a phenomenal breadth of technology, with incredibly smart people, to create reliable, resilient, scalable and optimised software systems.

What does the mobile team do?

We combine creativity and brainpower at the cutting edge of mobile development.

Our mobile development team create our award winning suite of mobile apps that now generate around 30% of our 140,000 weekly orders. The team mainly develops apps for iOS, but also android, windows 8 and other mobile platforms. As the percentage of weekly orders taken on mobile is growing rapidly, it is backed by major new projects within the team.

We are looking for iOS Software Engineers to join the team as we continue the development of this technically challenging and ever-evolving suite of apps.

The Ocado apps are unique in our sector in that they provide online and offline shopping capabilities, and as such provide a very interesting technical challenge.

What you need to know

You’ll have extensive OOP skills gained through formal study at a respected university, combined with real world experience in objective-C. You’ll have extensive knowledge of the iOS SDK and the xcode development environment, ideally having worked as a technical lead on a popular iOS project, or having released your own iOS applications into the App Store.

You’ll be able to pick new concepts up quickly, and as you understand the fundamentals of computer science (as well as being a specialist in objective-C) you will be comfortable moving between technologies, as you may occasionally work on other platforms, such as android. You’ll be a good team player, and used to working in a scrum team, however you must also be motivated to work by yourself, or even lead a small group of developers when required. You’ll be keen to automate repetitive tasks with scripts and automated testing tools wherever possible. You’ll enjoy working in an agile environment, and be familiar with agile tools such as Jenkins.

If you have a 1st class or 2:1 degree in Computer Science, and top A-level grades in numerate disciplines such as Maths, Further Maths and/or Physics and can demonstrate some or all of the above criteria, then please get in touch with us to hear more.

What we can offer you

Technically stretching work is a given. We want you to push technological boundaries and create solutions to problems people haven’t even thought about yet; so we’ll give you the freedom and the tools and the playful, stimulating working environment you need to do what’s never been done before. While red tape’s conspicuous by its absence, rewards are plentiful:  as well as a competitive salary, benefits include pension scheme, interest-free season ticket loan and, of course, a healthy 15% Ocado staff discount (and free delivery).
