We’re Ocado Technology. We are responsible for developing in-house almost all the software that powers ocado.com, the world's largest online-only grocery retailer, including their end-to-end ecommerce, fulfilment and logistics platform.
Our technology estate is very broad and deep: real-time control systems, robotics, vision systems, machine learning, simulation, data science, forecasting systems, routing systems, inference engines, big data and many more.
We are engaged in an ambitious project to rewrite from scratch our end to end software platform to run in the cloud, refresh all our technology stacks and wipe out our accumulated technical debt. We have also developed a new modular and scalable hardware platform for building our highly automated warehouses, we call them Customer Fulfilment Centres (CFCs), the next two of which are under construction. The combination of these software and hardware platforms is what we call the Ocado Smart Platform (OSP), which we will use to put some of the largest bricks and mortar retailers around the world online using our disruptive business model.
As a disruptor, Ocado are constantly looking for ways to disrupt ourselves in order to remain the best in the world at what we do. For Ocado Technology that means constantly evolving our competencies, structures, culture, values and ways of working in order to power Ocado wherever it decides to go. Achieving this vision means we need to constantly re-invent ourselves, constantly learning fast, constantly evolving our craftsmanship and constantly taking risks.
We are rapidly expanding. While our head office operations are based in the UK, we currently have five development offices across Europe to support our growth.
So what does an intern software developer do at Ocado Technology?
As an intern with Ocado Technology you will work on real development projects from day one and have the opportunity to see the code you develop working in a live production environment. Past interns have worked on projects across all Technology areas including:
CFC (Warehouse) Systems develop the real-time control systems that power our state- of-the-art automated warehouse requiring smart software and even brighter minds.
Routing and Customer Communications build the routing systems which optimise our delivery routes and develop the software created for our call centre and payment systems.
Webshop and Mobile Systems design and implement iOS applications to aid the shopping experience for our customers and enhance functionality of our award winning Webshop and associated destination sites.
Robotics Research develop novel sensor-guided robot solutions to further automate the highly automated manipulation of products within the CFCs.
Previous projects have included:
Ocado Express: Development of a standalone iOS application to enable customers to scan barcodes of items around their house and to add to their Ocado basket.
Code for Life: Producing an application based around a game to teach school children about coding.
Google Glass: Investigating wearable technologies such a Google Glass and Android Wear watches and how such devices can be used within the Ocado setting.
Placements are available for 12 months, 6 months, 4 months and 10 weeks (Summer Internship) commencing in September, April, June and July respectively.
Requirements: Minimum 2:1 for each of your course modules to date in a Computer Science related degree. You will have strong A-levels (or equivalent) ideally including an A grade in Maths. Ideally you will have a foundation in OOP and programming ability in Java or another OO language, plus a passion for technology and an eagerness to find solutions to complex problems.
Recruitment Process: Applications are reviewed on a first come first served basis. The process involves an online test (taken at home) and an assessment day that includes technical tests and interviews.
